This weekend, we spent an afternoon exploring Lava River Cave at the Newberry National Volcanic Monument on a trip to Bend, Oregon.

This mile-long cave is the longest lava tube in Oregon. It was originally discovered by settlers in the late 1800s.

The entrance to the cave is quite bright, but you quickly descent into total darkness.

There were interesting features on the walls and ceiling, though not as distinctive as ones found in the lava tubes at Craters of the Moon National Monument.

In Two Tube Tunnel, you come across two lava tubes stacked on top of each other where one lava river flowed into another.

The cave end is blocked by a sand plug, and park scientists don’t know how long the cave actually is beyond it.

We snapped a couple of pics of us at the end before heading back to the entrance.

Lava River Cave was pretty interesting to explore and is well worth checking out if you’re in Oregon.
